Today is the 75th anniversary #NakbaDay, a tragic day for Palestinians everywhere. 🇵🇸Here is my family's Nakba story.
For generations, my family lived in the Katamon neighborhood in West Jerusalem until May 15th, 1948, the Al-Nakba. On this day, all my relatives, after being warned of danger, packed small bags, locked their doors, piled into my grandfather’s car, and took sanctuary in the Greek Orthodox Monastery next to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City of Jerusalem. They were never allowed to return to their homes and, to this day, carry with them the keys to their houses, now occupied by others.
As the mukhtar, my great-grandfather was permitted to live at the convent until he died. My grandparents, after being married in Palestine, moved to Beirut and had my father, aunt, and uncle. They visited the Old City of Jerusalem each summer until the 1967 war prevented them from returning, only to be made refugees again a few years later by the Lebanese Civil War. The rest of my family scattered across the world.
I have relatives in Chile, Peru, Canada, Europe, Jordan, Lebanon, and the United States. We speak different languages. We celebrate different holidays. We eat different foods. But one thing we all share is the love for our homeland and the hope to return.
You may think to yourself "Well, that was so long ago!". Except the Nakba never ended. To this day Palestinians are being forced to leave their homes, often with nowhere to go. Palestinians living under the occupation are forced to endure daily oppression and are killed without accountability by settlers and members of the Isreali Defense Force. "What does this have to do with us?", you may ask. The U.S. government makes this ethnic cleansing possible through unequivocal political support and billions of dollars in military aid (coming straight from taxpayers pockets). Today is a reminder to fight against this injustice being carried out with our country’s blessing. No one is free, till we are ALL free.

It’s the 75th anniversary of the ‘Nakba’ – Britain needs to acknowledge its role
Britain’s role in Palestinian displacement is not restricted to its actions in the 20th century, writes Leanne Mohamad

“Palestinian artist Nour has been filming interviews with the last surviving witnesses of the Nakba, the forced displacement of 750,000 Palestinians in 1948. Today, May 15th, marks the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian Catastrophe, which led to the creation of the state of Israel. To commemorate the exodus, one of Nour's interviews is being shown on Al Jazeera's social media channel, AJ+. Nour's work is also being displayed at today's Joint Nakba Ceremony in Jerusalem, held in collaboration with Palestinian-Israeli activist crew Combatants for Peace. There will be photos accompanied by audio of the elders telling their stories. According to Nour, the subjects in her interviews are "the last remaining generation who witnessed Nakba–after them, there will be no one left to tell us first hand what happened."
She added: "80 percent of the time I would walk out the interview crying, or they would start crying. And then I'd feel guilty because I'd made these poor elders open up these wounds. But then I just kept telling myself, this has to be done." Nour is now in the process of building a website for her archive of English-translated testimonials.
"It means a Palestinian kid can go online in 20 years and hear them," she said. "It's important we have these resources available for future generations." Snippets of these interviews can be seen on Nour's Instagram page.
"Most of [the refugees] were farmers–very simple people living on their land, celebrating their children's weddings," she said. "And overnight, their lives were uprooted–they lost everything. The fact this was allowed to happen by the US, UK, France and Germany is just insane."
One elder from the former town of Al-Dawayima told Nour that he saw "Zionist forces committing massacres" on people praying in mosques. "He told me they killed over 40 people as they were praying," Nour said. "This was one of many stories."
Nour's aim is to produce a documentary series with the videos, honing in on the memories of the elders as well as the experiences of younger generations in refugee camps today. These camps were built as shelters by the UN after Palestinians were expelled from their homes in 1948. More than 400 Palestinian villages were destroyed. But with no right to self-determination, many had to stay in these camps. Today there are 58 recognised refugee camps in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.
“Well said Fadi! You've brought tears to my eyes, remembering the stories my ex-husband told me, so similar to yours. Losing his home, his father's land, everything except the clothes they stood up in as they fled to Trans-Jordan to start a new life with nothing. God bless you all, one day, inshallah ❤️🇵🇸🇵🇸”
75 years ago, Palestinians were displaced, forced into exile, and terrorised out of their homes and property.
My family are from Bethlehem, some lived here, some lived abroad, they all owned land in Palestine, they celebrated Palestine, they were proud of the oranges they exported from their groves in Yaffa, they were proud of the name Palestine to the point that my great uncle's telegram address in Manchester was "Palestina".
Wherever they went, they were proud Palestinians, they wrote Palestine in Chile, in Sudan, in Japan, in the Philippines, in Kiev, in Shanghai, in Bombay, in Paris....
As I grew up, my Sido Nakhleh seldom spoke of Yaffa, rarely spoke of oranges, the sadness and trauma most probably...
We were Palestinians, we are Palestinians and we shall remain Palestinians.....
